Review: EASEUS Partition Manager
Partitioning your hard drives is not something most people look forward to, in fact, most people dread it. However, it is a necessary task if you need to install another operating system, resize current partitions, and other disk management tasks you might be facing. Windows 7 has its own built-in partitioning tool, but as with many things, if you want more power and features you will need to go 3rd party. When it comes to disk utility tools, you typically need to shell out some dough for an app that you might only use a few times a year, if that. However, EASEUS Partition Manager is a free app that will do just that. How does it stack up? Read on!
Partitioning drives can be a confusing task to some, so when I first opened up Partition Manager I was pleased to see a clean user interface that lays out all the functions right in front of you. This is good for new and experienced user alike. Once the app is opened, you will see a list of your drives with a bar graph showing the allocated and unallocated space. Clicking Properties will give you an even more detailed info window.
I started off with one of the most common tasks I deal with, and that is the resizing and moving of a partition. Let me also take a moment to note that before you do any maintenance on a hard disk, backup your data. With that being said, the most basic operation here is to select the drive to resize, and use the sliders to adjust or compress the space. Partition Manager does this in a non-destructive manner, unlike the “old days” where you could hardly do anything to the drive without erasing something. Of course depending upon your situation and needs, doing other tasks such as merging, splitting, and converting partitions is just as simple. I was impressed with the speed and reliability of all the tasks I put to it.
Another important feature that makes this a worthy download is the partition copying feature. Need to move your OS to another drive? No problem! The wizard-based copying feature can migrate the entire drive or just a specified partition. I really can’t emphasize how handy and important a function like this is to users these days. It might not be something you use everyday, but having a solution on -hand for when you do need it is smart.
These are two most common uses I have for an app like this, but fortunately it includes several other features like partition recovery, rebuilding the MBR, defragmenting, and more. Aside from a few minor UI annoyances like difficult to read fonts, I really couldn’t find any faults in the functionality of EASEUS Partition Manager. It’s sometimes hard to find free applications that are as powerful as this, but it is a welcome addition to my collection, and it should be in your as well.
