Review: SnagIt 10
My adventures in both my “day job” and my blogging exploits both require me to take a lot of screenshots. Most of this is for some type of demonstration work whether it is showing off a cool app as I’m doing in this review, or specifying a feature in an application or website. Either way I need a tool that can quickly take snaps of my desktop screen and edit those screenshots for a variety of purposes. The default way of taking screenshots in Windows is just too basic, so obviously a third-party tool is what you are going to need.
SnagIt 10 is one of my top software tools in my arsenal of day to day work. I have been using SnagIt for several years, and this release is the best so far. Whether you need to capture just a small part of the screen, an entire application window, or the entire screen – it can be done easily with SnagIt. It features several profile modes that include an all-in-one capture, full screen, freehand, and several more. You can also create your own profiles and extend them with a ton of options such as different input and output modes, effects, etc. There really isn’t enough room here to explain how flexible SnagIt can be as far as configuration. It even has a timer and delay feature for capturing those screenshots that need to be setup.
Capturing the screen is just one part of it though. Editing and post-work is a given for anyone who takes tons of screenshots. The SnagIt Editor is really the most valuable part as I use it for editing images that weren’t even screenshots originally. The basic image editing functions are all there – cropping, resizing, etc. As mentioned above I use SnagIt for showing specifics of an app, and that is where the Draw feature comes in real handy. I can place Stamps and Callouts on my images which I use for highlighting a specific area of the image, and you can just as easily add text to those as well. Size, colors, and everything in between are also customizable to give your captures your own unique and professional look.
If you take and keep a lot of captures it can be difficult to keep track of all of them. SnagIt lets you assign tags to images, and it has a great search pane where you can find and sort images via tags, flags, dates, and more.
I really can’t recommend SnagIt enough. It excels at screen capturing and editing, and for anyone who uses screen captures for either personal or professional work won’t be disappointed in SnagIt. Its ease of use is perfect for beginners, and its advanced editing and post-work abilities make it a must-have for more advanced users.
