Review: OmniGraphSketcher for iPad
The Omni Group have been making some sensational apps for the iPad since it was introduced. I had the pleasure of reviewing OmniGraffle, and now I wanted to turn to another one of their apps, OmniGraphSketcher. OmniGraphSketcher is an iPad application designed to allow you to design graphs and charts using the iPads touchscreen. Whether it is a simple graph you need to create, or something more complex, it all seems possible with this app.
The interface for this app is quite simple, with just a couple of buttons for the draw tool, the fill tool, and the properties window. Several templates are included showing a variety of graphs and charts that can be created. These can be used as a starting point for your own document, or just used as example files on how to achieve certain types of charts.
A new document will give you a nearly blank canvas to work off of, and via the properties window you can modify the grid, axes, color, etc. Depending on what type of chart or graph you need to make, the draw tool can be used freehand or drawn by points to create the lines needed. Selecting the item you can then modify the style with different shapes, thickness, color, and more. Just as easily, you can add text boxes to label your document with the appropriate text. In addition, the fill tool can be used to do just as it says….fill items in your charts.
Once everything is done you have several options available to export your graphs as a PDF or image, and send the graph by mail. Other users can open the graphs on another iPad or with the desktop version of OmniGraphSketcher. A recent update also brings support the Apple VGA adapter for external displays.
OmniGraphSketcher excels at what it is made to do – create beautiful and precise charts and graphs with very minimal work. The only gripes I have is although the interface is simple, it might be a bit too simple for some folk. A little more instruction on the functions might be helpful for some, but this doesn’t take away anything from the end result, and that is some great looking graphs.
